De verkeerde kleur is geleverd. Bij navraag om de juiste kleur toe te zenden kreeg ik terug dat die kleur niet op voorraad was. Dat was wel zo toen ik bestelde. Uiteindelijk is terugbetaling gedaan plus ik mag het verkeerd geleverde paar sokken houden. Jammer van de communicatie. Kwaliteit van de sokken is prima. Hoop dat ik mijn originele bestelling nog kan ontvangen

Die Verarbeitung ist, wie man es von Red Wing erwartet, erstklassig und die US-Handwerkskunst spürt man bei jedem Detail. Die limitierte blaue Farbe macht den 8809 für mich zu etwas ganz Besonderem. I should begin by saying that these are not merely boots. Calling them “boots” feels rather like calling a vintage Harley “a convenient method of getting to the shops.” Technically accurate, perhaps, but missing the point so comprehensively that you may as well not have spoken. These are Red Wing Classic Mocs rendered in a magnificent shade of tidal blue—a colour somewhere between the North Atlantic Ocean, a very expensive artist’s paint and the exact shade your sensible friend would advise you not to buy. Naturally, that made them irresistible. I already own enough Red Wings to understand that this purchase was not prompted by necessity. Nobody looked at my footwear collection and said, “What you desperately need is another pair of extremely well-made American boots.” There was no practical footwear emergency. I was not standing barefoot in the street. This was a decision made entirely by the part of my brain that appreciates beautiful objects and occasionally overrules the department responsible for financial restraint. The first challenge was finding them. My size had disappeared from the UK, and there appeared to be very few pairs available anywhere in Europe. At that point, buying them stopped being ordinary shopping and became an international heritage-footwear rescue operation. A pair was eventually located in Italy, negotiations were conducted, funds were transferred and the boots began their journey to Sheffield. I prefer to think that I didn’t simply buy them—I repatriated them. Opening the box was a moment of genuine theatre. There they were: unapologetically blue, beautifully constructed and looking as though a traditional Minnesota work boot had spent a year at art school, joined an obscure band and returned with much better clothes. The colour is outstanding. Photographs make them look vivid, but in person the leather has far more depth and character. Depending on the light, they move between deep ocean blue, petrol blue and a slightly weathered turquoise. They are striking without looking ridiculous, although I accept that “not ridiculous” is a highly subjective assessment when discussing bright blue moc-toe boots on a 61-year-old man from Sheffield. Construction is exactly what you would expect from Red Wing: substantial leather, proper stitching and the general impression that the boots will still be functional long after several cheaper pairs have surrendered, separated from their soles and entered landfill. They feel reassuringly solid without looking bulky, and the dark sole is a particularly good choice. A white wedge sole might have pushed them towards novelty territory; the black sole gives them a tougher, more grown-up appearance. As grown-up as tidal-blue boots can reasonably be expected to look. The fit in size 44 is excellent for me. Red Wings are rarely slippers straight from the box, and these do need some wearing in, but that is part of the arrangement. You don’t simply wear a pair of Red Wings; you gradually negotiate with them until mutual respect is established. Initially, the boots make it clear that they were made from serious leather by serious people. Then, with time, warmth and perseverance, they begin to shape themselves around your feet and eventually become uniquely yours. They look superb with dark selvedge denim, olive combat trousers or simple workwear pieces. The key is to let the boots do the talking—which is fortunate, because these boots have arrived with a prepared speech, their own microphone and a lighting technician. The rest of the outfit can remain quiet. They have already been promoted in my wardrobe hierarchy to “special pair” status. These are not boots for taking the bins out in the rain or crawling underneath a boiler. They are boots for gigs, weekends, the office when I feel like causing a mild disturbance and possibly a future date who needs to understand from the outset that I take footwear unnecessarily seriously. Will everybody like them? No. Some people prefer black or brown boots, sensible family cars and magnolia walls. There is nothing wrong with those people. I simply don’t wish to dress like them. The great thing about the Tidal Classic Moc is that underneath the unusual colour sits a genuinely timeless design. They are not fashion boots pretending to be work boots; they are proper Red Wings that happen to have been dipped in the sea during a particularly beautiful sunset. The familiar moc toe, heavyweight construction and unmistakable silhouette keep them grounded, while the colour gives them personality. Are they extravagant? Slightly. Did I need them? Absolutely not. Was locating a rare pair in my size and having them sent from Italy a perfectly sensible course of action? Again, absolutely not. Would I do it all over again? Without the slightest hesitation. They are rare, beautifully made, gloriously impractical and quite possibly the coolest boots I own. Every wardrobe deserves at least one item that makes its owner grin before even putting it on. These do exactly that. Five stars—and an additional honorary sixth star for having the confidence to be this blue.

Taglia e colore vanno bene, ma sono arrivati macchiati (come da foto) e la macchia non é venuta via né con la candeggina delicata né con il vanish, quindi penso siano unti. In più il tessuto interno delle tasche é consumato già con dei “pelucchi”, insomma sembrano usati. Li terrò perché mi servono e vestono molto bene, ma non sono molto soddisfatto del servizio. Mi dispiace
